Despite President Bola Tinubu’s visit to Benue State on Wednesday to commiserate with victims of the Yelwata massacre, hundreds of angry residents took to the streets in protest, demanding justice for the over 200 lives lost during the recent attack.
Viral footage circulating on social media shows demonstrators pulling down All Progressives Congress (APC) flags and chanting anti-government slogans.
In one video, a protester can be heard shouting, “I personally matched [the flag] on the ground,” while others voice their outrage at the federal government’s perceived silence and inaction.
The demonstration, which erupted in Makurdi and nearby communities, reflects deep public anger over the wave of killings attributed to suspected armed herdsmen in the Guma Local Government Area.
Many protesters accused the government of neglecting the security and welfare of rural communities, despite the president’s visit and ongoing military deployments under Operation Whirl Stroke.
“Even with the president in town, we are still mourning. What we want is justice and security, not empty visits,” one protester said.
President Tinubu had earlier arrived in Makurdi, where he visited survivors at the hospital
