Ado Ekiti, Nigeria – The Ekiti State Government has urged traditional rulers to avoid internal conflicts and situations that could trigger disunity in their domains, warning that unchecked infighting could stall or stagnate development.

The warning came as the new Obanla of Ijesa-Isu, Oba David Olusegun Ateji, praised Governor Biodun Oyebanji for his respectful engagement with monarchs, describing it as a driving force for sporadic development across the state.

Deputy Governor Monisade Afuye delivered the appeal on Thursday during a courtesy visit by Oba Ateji and his council to her office in Ado Ekiti, the state capital. Oba Ateji, of the Omotoyo Royal Dynasty, was recently crowned to succeed Oba Oso Gabriel Adeniyi, who passed away on 23rd September 2024.

Mrs. Afuye, in a statement signed by her Special Assistant on Media, Victor Ogunje, encouraged the monarch to extend an olive branch to opponents to consolidate peace within the community. She emphasized that the success of Oba Ateji’s reign—and the town’s development—depends on unity among all stakeholders.

“Kabiyesi, as you step into the royal position of your forebears, I pray that your reign will be peaceful and successful. But this can only happen if you maintain peace among your people,” Mrs. Afuye said. “Any infighting can slow down development. You are now the prescribed authority; use that position to unify your people. Do not see anyone as an enemy.”

Oba Ateji lauded Governor Oyebanji and his cabinet for their integrity in overseeing traditional matters, describing the selection process that led to his coronation as fair and transparent. He disclosed that he had begun a reconciliation initiative to engage aggrieved contenders, assuring that no one would be alienated under his rule.

“I have started a unification process immediately I came in, because I know the value of peace. Ijesa Isu belongs to all of us, and we have to build it together,” Oba Ateji said. “Where my predecessor stopped, I will push development further, ensuring peace and tranquility among our people.”

The Obanla also confirmed his community’s support for Governor Oyebanji’s second-term ambition, expressing gratitude for a fair selection process that allowed the emergence of a worthy monarch without imposition.
