The current world number three Iga Swiatek kept her tournament hopes alive at the French Open on Wednesday. The top Polish player advanced to the third round after securing a 6-2, 6-3 win over Czech rival Sara Bejlek. Even though the French Open clash was filled with numerous unforced errors, her superior quality proved too much for her opponent.
The four-time champion has a fantastic record at Roland Garros, losing just twice since 2020. However, she struggled to find her rhythm during this match, hitting 38 unforced errors and serving several double faults. The Polish star will next compete against either former champion Jelena Ostapenko or fellow countrywoman Magda Linette to win a spot in the last-16 stage.
The match began with both players losing their initial service games under the sun on Court Philippe Chatrier. Swiatek then raced into a commanding 5-1 lead before accidentally gifting world number 35 Bejlek a break point. The favorite often rushed her shots but still took the first set easily.
The second set stayed messy, with five of the first eight games going against the server. Swiatek eventually wrapped up the victory when Bejlek hit a forehand directly into the net. Reflecting on the challenge, Swiatek said: “She has a different style of play and I had to adjust to that. She uses a lot the fact that she’s a leftie, serving into my backhand.”
In other French Open action, Ukrainian tennis star Elina Svitolina enjoyed a much smoother second-round victory. The recent Italian Open winner defeated Spanish qualifier Kaitlin Quevedo in straight sets, finishing with a comfortable 6-0, 6-4 scoreline.
