The Labour Party (LP) has scheduled April 28, 2026, for its presidential primary, unveiling a detailed timetable for its ward, local government, and state congresses ahead of the exercise.
According to the party’s programme, ward congresses will be held on April 23, followed by Local Government Area (LGA) congresses on April 24, while state congresses are slated for April 25, 2026.
The timetable was conveyed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in a formal letter signed by the party’s Interim National Chairman, Nenadi Usman, and made available to journalists in Abuja.
Usman explained that the notification aligns with statutory requirements, including provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended) and the 1999 Constitution, which mandate political parties to inform INEC of their congresses, conventions, and major meetings.
She recalled that the party had earlier postponed its activities to allow for broader participation among members and to complete its ongoing digital membership registration exercise.
With the process now concluded, the party has approved a revised timetable for its internal elections and national convention.
“The national convention is scheduled for April 28 at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia, Abia State,” she stated.
Usman further urged INEC to direct its state offices to monitor the congresses and convention in line with its constitutional responsibilities.
