Nigerian singer Omah Lay has sparked conversation in the music industry after declaring that Afrobeats is losing its global momentum, particularly in Western markets.
Speaking during his Lagos Warehouse Session on Thursday night, the artist—whose real name is Omah Stanley Didia—stated that the genre’s widespread international appeal in recent years has begun to decline.
“Overseas, Afrobeats is declining. It is facts. Our artistes are doing really great but the Afrobeats that you guys used to know in 2020–2024 is not the Afrobeats you know now anymore,” he said.
Despite acknowledging the continued efforts of Nigerian artistes, Omah Lay suggested that the sound and global reception of Afrobeats have evolved, with its earlier dominance no longer as strong as before.
The singer also revealed that he has been closely studying his musical influences in a bid to contribute to a resurgence of the genre.
According to him, his upcoming work is aimed at pushing creative boundaries and inspiring fellow artistes to elevate their craft, with the goal of restoring Afrobeats’ global influence
