Controversial street–pop singer, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, sparked fresh debate after declaring that he has supported more rising talents in the Nigerian music industry than heavyweight stars Olamide, Don Jazzy, Wizkid and Davido.
In a video shared on social media, the Zazu crooner insisted that his goodwill extends beyond the entertainment scene to struggling youths and homeless persons. He argued that real help is not measured by money or fame but by direct involvement in transforming lives.
Portable accused top musicians of distancing themselves from ordinary people online, stressing that many celebrities “won’t acknowledge fans even when they promote their songs.” He said he reposts every positive video about him and works with upcoming artistes without charging a fee.
“Even with your money, many celebrities won’t let you feature them as an upcoming artist,” he said. “But I help people freely. I have helped more people in the music industry than Don Jazzy, Olamide, Wizkid and Davido.”
He further explained that genuine assistance involves providing shelter, clothing, food and funding an artiste’s first studio session—not exploiting them for business gains.
Portable accused some industry giants of branding young artistes as ungrateful once they seek independence. “You only used them for business,” he argued, maintaining that most so-called support efforts are strictly transactional.
