South Africa secured a historic place in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating South Korea on the final matchday of Group A on Wednesday.

The victory saw Bafana Bafana advance beyond the group stage of the global tournament for the first time in their history, marking a significant milestone for South African football.

In the other Group A fixture, Mexico defeated Czechia to strengthen their position in the standings and conclude the group phase on a high note.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, being jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, features an expanded 48-team format for the first time. Under the new structure, the top two teams from each of the 12 groups automatically qualify for the Round of 32, alongside the eight best third-placed teams.

South Africa’s qualification adds another African representative to the knockout rounds, with the team now looking to continue its impressive run in the competition.

The final Group A standings and the identities of the teams progressing will determine the Round of 32 fixtures as the tournament moves into its decisive phase.
