Fear has gripped the Nasarawa State University, Keffi community after suspected gunmen reportedly abducted at least eight students during a midnight attack on off-campus hostels near the institution’s Engineering Campus in Gudi.

The incident reportedly happened around 1:00 a.m. on Thursday when the armed attackers invaded several student lodges close to the university environment. Witnesses said the gunmen forcefully entered the hostels before taking the students to an unknown destination.

The attack created panic across the area as gunshots and cries for help filled the neighbourhood for several minutes. Many students reportedly hid inside their rooms while the operation continued.

One source, who spoke anonymously, described the frightening situation and claimed security operatives did not respond quickly during the incident. According to the source, “As the sh%oting and shouting were going on, students were crying and hiding in fear. There was no visible security response while the operation lasted.”

The student abduction has increased tension within the university community, especially as students are currently sitting for examinations. Several residents and students have also raised concerns about the level of security around the campus and nearby communities following the incident.

Many students now fear for their safety and are calling on the Nasarawa State Government and security agencies to take urgent action. Community members have also appealed for stronger security measures around the university to prevent future attacks.

The incident adds to growing concerns about insecurity affecting schools and students in different parts of Nigeria.

Do you think universities should have stronger security arrangements to protect students living off campus?
