Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo may miss the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after receiving his first red card in international football during Portugal’s 2–0 loss to the Republic of Ireland on Thursday.

The 40-year-old forward initially got a yellow card in the 61st minute for elbowing Irish defender Dara O’Shea. However, a VAR review overturned the decision, upgrading it to a straight red for violent conduct.

Under FIFA’s disciplinary rules, Ronaldo automatically faces a one-match ban in competitive fixtures. But the punishment could extend further, as violent conduct — including elbowing — attracts a minimum three-match suspension or an “appropriate period of time” depending on the severity of the offence.

Because bans for violent conduct must be served in competitive matches, Ronaldo cannot offload the suspension during pre-World Cup friendlies, putting his participation in Portugal’s opening game at serious risk.

If enforced, the suspension will mark a historic moment in Ronaldo’s career, as this was the first red card in his 226 appearances for Portugal.
