Iranian Football Federation president Mehdi Taj has admitted he does not know whether striker Sardar Azmoun will return to Iran’s squad for the upcoming World Cup, despite growing calls for his recall.

Azmoun, who has scored 57 goals in 91 appearances for Iran, was left out of coach Amir Ghalenoei’s preliminary squad amid reports that officials questioned his loyalty to the government. The 31-year-old forward recently defended his patriotism in a passionate public statement, which later prompted support from Iranian Vice President Abdolkarim Hosseinzadeh.

“If possible, let us bring him back to the national team,” Hosseinzadeh wrote on X. “This is not merely a sporting decision, but a message in favour of national unity.”

Speaking to Iranian television on Thursday, Mehdi Taj said discussions about Sardar Azmoun were still ongoing and no final decision had been reached regarding his inclusion in the World Cup squad.

Reports in Iranian media claimed Azmoun angered hardline supporters after posting a photograph with Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, shortly after air strikes involving the United States and Israel targeted Iran. Azmoun currently plays club football in the United Arab Emirates.

Iran’s national team is now holding a training camp in Turkey as officials prepare to finalise the 26-man squad before FIFA’s deadline on Monday. The team will also base itself in Tijuana, Mexico, after concerns reportedly emerged from U.S. authorities about hosting Iran during the tournament.

Meanwhile, visa issues continue to create uncertainty ahead of the competition. Mehdi Taj insisted FIFA must guarantee entry visas for players and officials travelling to the United States for matches during the World Cup.

Will Sardar Azmoun return in time to help Iran at the World Cup?
